Small Space Home Gym Design: How to Create an Efficient Workout Area

Crafting a home gym is an exciting adventure. You’re taking control of your lifestyle and incorporating more exercise in a convenient location. But what if your home is on the smaller side? Do you have to settle for going to a gym?

Not at all!

C&C Courts specializes in helping homeowners create functional home gyms in small spaces. With these tips, you can work out in the comfort of your home, save money on gym fees, and live a healthier life.

Choose Your Space Wisely

Before you buy any equipment for your home gym, you need to identify the workout zone. The goal is to establish a dedicated space, even if it's just temporary. Here are a few strategies to help you find the right space in your home for your workout area.

  • Find an unused corner in your bedroom, living room, or large walk-in closet. You only need enough space to comfortably lie down on a yoga mat and extend your arms and legs.

  • Create a hidden gym that can be easily converted, such as the area in front of your bed, a clear space in the living room, or an empty wall for resistance band exercises.

  • Make the area non-negotiable and keep it as clear as possible. No draping clean clothes over it.

Prioritize Equipment Using the “Less is More” Strategy

In a small space, every piece of equipment must justify its existence. Focus on finding compact, versatile items that can be easily stored if needed. Some examples of great, compact equipment include:

  • Resistance bands and tubes are perfect for replicating the function of dozens of dumbbells and machines.

  • Adjustable dumbbells that can change weight at the turn of a dial.

  • An adjustable kettlebell for both strength and cardio.

  • Yoga/Exercise mat

  • Jump rope is perfect for cardio in small spaces.

  • Doorway pull-up bar

Use Clever Storage Techniques

If your workout space is pulling double-duty, then you need to have a way to store your equipment. Some helpful techniques include:

  • Storing your equipment under the bed

  • Over-the-door hooks for hanging bands or jump ropes

  • Wall-mounted shelves or racks for dumbbells and other equipment

  • A rolling utility cart that can be pushed away when not used

Another option is purchasing dual-purpose furniture, such as an ottoman that has storage inside.

Create a Motivating Environment

Even in a small space,  you can add a few touches to make your workout area feel intentional and inviting. Try including some of the following:

  • Full-length mirror for checking form

  • Good, bright lightning to make you feel energized

  • A media area where you can watch TV or listen to music while you work out

  • Keep the area clean so it’s always ready to go when you are
