So You Want to Add a Basketball Court to Your Backyard in Minnesota
Are you looking for a way to incorporate more exercise into your life, but hate the gym? Consider building a backyard basketball court!
Home athletic courts are gaining popularity as more people jump on the healthy-lifestyle bandwagon. And we understand why; home courts are easy to maintain, never crowded, and they’re perfect for hosting tournaments or other parties.
If you’re a basketball fan and want to shoot some hoops with your family, consider building a basketball court in your Minnesota backyard. C&C Court’s expert design and build team is ready and waiting to help you move toward a healthier future. Let’s examine the basic things you need to consider when building your dream basketball court.
Court Size
Let’s talk about size first–there are a few benchmarks for size to consider. First, keep in mind the free-throw lane is 12’ wide and the distance from the backboard is 15’. This means you need about 12’x18’ worth of space for a half-court.
If you want three-point lines on the court, you will need to go at least 27’ deep away from the hoop pole. This will give you some nice room at the top of the three-point line to set up for the shot.
Remember, a three-point line is 19’9” (high school 3 point) from the center of the rim, not the backboard or pole. The center of the rim is 15” from the backboard. If you want the full range of the three-point line, you will need to go at least 45’ wide, or ideally 50’. The perfect backyard basketball courts we build are 30’x50’.
If you do not have enough room for the entire three-point line, keep those benchmarks in mind as you downsize the court. Some alternative court sizes include 27’x27’ and 27’x35’ for smaller backyards. These sizes allow for the three-point line and can accommodate 3-on-3 games.
Hoops and Accessories
Every basketball court needs a hoop, so purchasing the right one is essential. If you are playing with a variety of ages and skill levels, consider adding an adjustable hoop. They are more stable and can be lowered to accommodate smaller children and beginner players.
Other court accessories you want to consider include:
Flooring Options
Most of our outdoor courts start as concrete surfaces, but you can overlay them with a high-quality outdoor flooring. Choosing a superior outdoor court flooring is essential for safety, durability, and performance.
C&C Courts offers PrimePlay. This durable court surface is perfect for your outdoor basketball court, as it offers low skin abrasion risk, patented Lateral Forgiveness for shock absorption, and durable materials to withstand Minnesota’s winters.
PrimePlay is also low maintenance, but regular athletic court maintenance is essential for keeping your court in top condition.
