What Is the Best Outdoor Putting Green Surface?

What Is the Best Outdoor Putting Green Surface?

When you close your eyes, you can see it clearly… The ball gently rolling into the hole, the crowd going wild, Tiger Woods giving you a fist bump; that prestigious green jacket is officially yours!

But when you open your eyes, you’re still looking at the impossible: A twenty-foot putt with plenty of bumps, divots, and debris clogging your path to perfection…

Thankfully, you can take comfort in knowing that regardless of whether you sink this putt or not, every putt is practice, and practice, well… Makes perfect!

When you practice your putting, your golf ball should roll smoothly across the green, as any imperfections can cause your putt to go awry. So when you’re building an outdoor putting green in your backyard, you have to choose the right putting green surface. After all, your practice should emulate the greens you play on at the golf course.

C&C Courts offer the best outdoor putting green surfaces to help you perfect your short game. Let’s take a look at what makes a good putting green.

Putting Green Factors to Consider

A good artificial putting green should allow the golfer to have a realistic, enjoyable experience. There are several important aspects to consider when choosing a putting green surface material:

  • Speed and Consistency: A good putting green should offer consistent ball speed across the entire surface. With the right putting green surface, your ball should roll just as expected.

  • Durability and Weather Resistance: Your artificial putting green should withstand different weather conditions, like rain, wind, snow, and UV exposure.

  • Drainage: To avoid water buildup on your green, ensure it has proper drainage to keep water flowing.

If you are serious about your home putting green, these factors should play a role in your final decision.

Synthetic vs Natural Grass for Putting Greens

When choosing a surface for a backyard putting green, you can also choose between synthetic or natural grass. Each is good for practicing your putts in your backyard, but they each have pros and cons.

For example, synthetic turf is great because it’s low-maintenance, durable, and doesn't need to be watered or mowed. The downside is a higher upfront cost, though you will get a longer practice season from turf than from real grass.

Natural grass for putting greens is also an option. There are three types of natural grass used for putting greens: Bentgrass, Bermudagrass, and Poa Annua. Natural grass provides an authentic putting experience and natural aesthetics. However, it does require more maintenance, including watering, mowing, and fertilizing. It also has higher long-term costs as compared to the upfront cost of synthetic turf.

4 Outdoor Putting Green Surfaces From C&C Courts

C&C Courts offer some of the best putting green surfaces for home putting greens. Our surfaces come with Natural Break Technology, which allows the ball to roll naturally. The fibers help suspend the ball like natural turf for optimal speed and ball roll.

We carry four types of putting green surfaces for you to choose from.

1. Par Turf

Par Turf is our most recreational putting green experience. If you’re a newer golfer looking to improve your short game, Par Turf would be perfect for you. This turf features a thick weave and foam pad, offering a real grass feel. It also offers lasting durability and performance.

2. Birdie Turf

Birdie Turf is the next step up from Par Turf. This turf has more emphasis on ball control. The fibers on Birdie Turf influence ball roll and break. Birdie Turf comes with 48 ounces of tufted nylon per square yard, which makes it one of the most resilient, long-lasting putting greens for your backyard.

3. Eagle Turf

Eagle Turf is our premium putting green surface and one of the best on the market. It offers the thickest nylon weave per square yard. It also has a natural green color that will help it blend into your backyard's aesthetics. Eagle Turf’s density of fibers allows for a more consistent ball roll, much like that of a country club golf course.

4. Fringe

Perfecting a chip shot is never easy, which is why we carry Fringe. This putting green can surround your green and help you expand your short game and practice your chip shots. Fringe is made up of tufted nylon and a reinforced roof zone, meaning the artificial blades of green will stand up to continuous use without affecting their natural appearance.

Golf Training Zone Essentials

To create a perfect training environment for golf, you need a few extra accessories to simulate a real golf game. Some of the top accessories for golf training include:

  • A net system for catching balls

  • Sand traps for bunker play

  • Ball collection system

Putting Exercise to Maintain Your Short Game

Once you have your backyard putting green, it’s the perfect time to practice your short game. Here are a few putting exercises to help you improve your putting skills.

  • The Clock Drill: Place three balls at three-foot increments (3,6 and 9 feet) from the hole and additional balls at clock positions 12, 3, 6, and 9. Make all 12 shots in a row while completing the clock.

  • The Ladder Drill: Place a few tees at intervals of 5 or 10 feet. The goal is to hit the ball and get it to stop as close to the tee as possible.

  • The Path Drill: Place two clubs in straight, parallel lines on either side of your ball. Leave enough space so your putter fits between. Hit the ball with your putter so it does not hit either club. The point is to help make your putt as straight as possible.
